Miami Marlins (+180) vs. Chicago Cubs (-200) / 2:08pm EST
Our first game of the mini slate today brings us an amazing pitching matchup with Sixto Sanchez of the Marlins going up against Yu Darvish of the Cubbies. Yu Darvish has been sensational this season, boasting a 2.01 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and striking out 93 batters in only 76 innings pitched. With his increased usage of the cutter and curveball this season, he has dropped his fastball usage from 35% to 25% which has had a direct correlation to his homerun rate dropping substantially.
However, with a career 5.81 ERA in the postseason, there is a little room for concern at -200 odds on which Yu Darvish we will get in an elimination game. And then there’s the young flamethrower Sixto Sanchez. With a 100mph fastball, that doesn’t seem to lose any gas as the game goes on, a Pedro-esque change up and a wipe out slider, you’ll be hard pressed to find another pitcher with better stuff than the 22 year old. Sanchez was a late call up for the Fish and dazzled in his first three outings, but has since struggled with his command to finish the season. If there’s one thing I know about Sixto (being a Marlins fan myself), is that this dude ain’t afraid of NOBODY. Look for him to bounce back strong against this struggling Cubs offense and deliver a quality start for Miami.
I see this being a low scoring ball game and can’t help but take the underdog Marlins here with an elite arm talent on the mound. Yu Darvish in 2019 was the third worst amongst starting pitchers in allowing stolen bases, so look for the Marlins (2nd in the MLB in stolen bases) to take advantage of Yu on the base paths as they’ve done all year. The Fish squeak out a close one here and surprisingly move on to the NLDS!
